I was in an accident on a California Highway. The CHP officer was in such a rush to clear the accident scene (it was already on the side of the road and I was the only car there) that he FORCED me to used the tow truck company he called. However, when I stated i had a tow truck company on the phone he said not to bother because I wasn't going to have to pay for the tow. "I understand that you're a student (4.2 y.o. but living on student wages) and can't afford the towing but there is no charge for this towing" California does have the "Freeway Patrol Service" which provides FREE limited road side assistance including towing of accident victim's cars off the highway, as far as the next exit. This service is offered by one and only one company in the Sacramento area and no, it wasn't the company he called. The officer stated to me, and in front of another witness, that the towing he was supplying wasn't going to cost me anything. He completed an Accident report card ( report number, his station and badge number, and the tow truck company info). SO, he knew who the tow truck company was BEFORE my car was towed. Before the truck arrived he literally gave me "two minutes to clean out my car of items I needed and to leave the scene". Well, I went to the location where my car was towed to to find that the CHP officer lied!!! and that I had a $210 charge for the towing. Since the tow service call was made by the officer, I was forced to pay a fixed rate of about $200 plus... If I had made the service call from the accident scene, I would have been charged no more than a normal towing. Having inquired with another company, that would have amounted to less that $75. And that is if I didn't get the services of the "Freeway Service Patrol," a right which I had. In CA, I have the right to select the company I want to work on my car in case of accident or the like. Shouldn't I have the same right for towing company service in case of accident? What kind of recourse do you think I have. I'm documenting the entire situation including notarized statement from my witness and will try to file a complaint with the officer's supervisor. I'm even considering taking the CHP department to court, albeit small claims... Any advice? Any laws that you know of that are in my favor? This is a California issue so if there are laws, can you cite the actual code... Please help here as I can't afford the $200 towing charge plus $65 fee for the towing company to hold my car for a total of 6 hours!!!!!!! AAA wasn't an option as i'm not a member. I had contacted a third party tow company who was going to tow my car. The decision to allow the CHP officer to have it towed was made only after he reiterated that there would be no charge. I guess even a sworn officer of the law doesn't have to be held to the expectations of honesty. Any recourse? Any laws in my favor? PS. my vehicle was on the side of the road and if he would have let me make the call I would have been off the road much faster than I was by using the brainless ripoff company he called. He lied and I'm calling him to the mat for it. I have a witness who will testify to the fact that he promised that towing was at no charge!!! He took advantage of someone in a state of traumatic shock and that should be enough to make a jury believe he was wrong!!!!

I am planning to buy a 35-40 ft toy hauler 5th wheel RV. I want to buy a used diesel truck to pull it. I dont want to buy new because it will only be used to tow twice a year, NY state to Arizona and back. I am looking in the 1995 to 2002 range and am leaning toward the Ford F350. I am willing to spend money on upgrades. I just dont want the payments. Thanks.

Curious about the guidlines for using yellow emergency lights on a tow truck
